Name: Darese Doskal-Scaffido |
| I have only known Darese for the two and a half years that she has worked at TC3, but in that time she has consistently impressed me. Darese took a struggling residence life program and turned it around. She attracted, developed and supported a great team of professional staff members, while setting the right tone of fostering student development while maintaining consistent expectations of behavior. After a relatively short period of time, Darese's responsiblities were expanded to include Judicial Affairs; she brought her experiences at Ithaca College and resources that she had developed to establish a clear and consistent Student Code of Conduct which applies to both residential and commuting students. When students are called before her for judicial issues Darese finds the right approach: educational whenever appropriate, clear and strong when a student needs to be held accountable for his/her actions. By working with many staff from various college offices, including Office of Public Safety, Counseling, Career and Transfer Services, the Health Center, Student Activities, Athletics and Recreation and Student Activities, Darese has contributed to the establishment of a positive educational and living climate at TC3. I have worked with her on many committees and she consistently contributes in valuable ways. Most recently Darese took on one of the co-chair positions on a Futures committee, a group assigned to look at how TC3 will navigate through the next decade. Though I was not on this committee, I understand that she took a large group of professionals, all of whom had different agendas, and facilitated productive dialogue resulting in several exciting recommendations. This process is on-going, but I have no doubt that Darese will play an active and important role as TC3 continues to serve our community. She is certainly one of the 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know. Nominated by Amy Trueman, Director Counseling, Career and Transfer Services Tompkins Cortland Community College As the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Life at Ithaca College, I would like to nominate Darese Doskal-Scaffido, Director of Residence Life and Judicial Affairs at Tompkins Cortland Community College, for the Cayuga Radio Group's 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know Award. Prior to assuming her present role at TC3, Darese served as the Associate Director of Residential Life at Ithaca College for a number of years. During her time at IC, I was always impressed by her dedication, work ethic, professionalism, and excellent performance. She was responsible for our programming efforts for students in our residence halls, advising the student led Residence Hall Association, Resident Assistant and professional staff selection and training, and served as a critical member of the Residential Life management team, second in command to the Director. Darese was an invaluable member of our staff and was true leader for so many initiatives on campus. She was always willing to do whatever was needed to make our students' experience a positive and fulfilling one. I know that Darese has had a similar impact at TC3 during her tenure there. I recommend her for this important award with great enthusiasm! She is certainly deserving of the recognition. Nominated by Brian McAree As a past recipient of this award, each year I make a commitment to find another Outstanding Woman that embodies the unsign female heroes of our community. This year, I am honored to nominate Darese Doskal-Scaffido, currently serving at the Director of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs at TC3. I have had the pleasure of working with Darese at both Ithaca College and TC3 and have seen her work her magic behind the scenes at both institutions. The field of residence life as a career choice, and especially the judicial element of it, are not sexy - let's face it - you need a high attention to detail, a high level of problem solving skill and high tolerance for angry people - as that is what you encounter on a daily basis in this field. Darese is one of the most patient and persistent people that I know. She handles student incidents, parent complaints, and roommate wars with professionalism and treats each incident as a learning opportunity for all involved. All are treated with respect and she starts with the baseline of seeking to understand the other point of view, and not from the typical defensive posture of quoting policy and procedure. Darese is also personally inspirational through her recent quest to be healthy and inspires me with her daily facebook posts of mileage on the treadmill or the neighborhood. She is also Mom to a special needs son and an adopted Chinese daughter - both of whom recieve the same special attention to detail she gives to her work life. She is active with the PTA and other local organizations. She is committed to her family and has found a way to balance a very demanding work life with a very demanding home life. From one past winner; humbled by the experience; I highly recommend that my friend and colleague Darese be included in this year's Outstanding Women pool of recipients. Nominated by Deborah Mohlenhoff Bio: I’m originally from St. Louis, MO. I attended Northwestern University for my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Indiana State University for a Masters of Science in College Student Personnel. I worked previously at University of Connecticut and Holyoke Community College. I moved to the Ithaca area for a position at Ithaca College where I worked in their Offices of Residential Life and Judicial Affairs for 11 years. In 2007 I accepted the position of Director of Residence Life and Judicial Affairs at Tompkins Cortland Community College. I really enjoy the student populations at all of our local colleges and am happy to be part of preparing our future leaders! Outside of work, most of my time focuses around my family and friends. Hannah is involved in gymnastics and Alex likes to take acting workshops through the Ithaca Youth Bureau. Joe’s work as Assistant Dean of Student Life allows us to be involved in many activities and events at Cornell. Our family travels revolve around Disney World in Orlando and trips to St. Louis to visit my family. |
