Quote to Live By: “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”

Shawn Martel-Moore is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to protecting the human and civil rights of all residents. As the Director for the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission, Shawn has given all of us hope and a sense of security that violations of our human rights, once brought to her attention, will not be left unaccounted for. From winning a probable cause determination in the landmark Kerney vs. Ithaca City School District case to opening her home to teen girls looking for a bit of respite so that they can refocus on being positive to single-handedly raising funds to help a displaced family of 6 find new housing and a new start,

Shawn makes human rights a priority for all. She is committed to helping those with the smallest need to others gaining the highest level of justice and satisfaction in civil and administrative law. She spends time in various agencies educating others about their human rights and teaching anti-discrimination work. She also gives freely of her time serving on numerous community organization boards, including Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Human Services Coalition.

Shawn also represents us and makes a name for Tompkins County outside of our area. She is a member of the Women's Bar Association of New York, serving on the Education Committee. There she is responsible for planning and implementing continuing education trainings as well as human and civil rights training for school-aged children, especially girls. Additionally, she serves as a board member on the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA). On this esteemed body she is the elected representative from among her peers for the Atlantic Region, which covers 12 states including New York.

Shawn is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served for 23 years (7½ yrs active and 15½ reserves). What makes Shawn so outstanding in my book is despite all her involvement she is a single mother raising a teenage son with medical issues. Yet, she makes time to ensure that the less fortunate, disenfranchised and discriminated against are heard and supported. She does all of it without fanfare and with the deepest humility and trust.

It is my honor to nominate my friend and esteemed colleague, Shawn as one of the 2011 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know. Thanks.
