Over the years, Eva Mae Musgrave has quietly been serving her communities. She has been on the boards of many organizations, including the Tioga County United Way, the Tioga County Local Development Board (as VP), the State ARC Board, and the State Red Cross Awards and Recognition (as Chairperson). She has also served on 3 tourism boards for the county, Finger Lakes, and state standards. Additionally, she served on the Students in Free Enterprise Board and currently serves on the Tyler Scholarship Board in Tompkins County. She has also been on the membership committee of Thumbs UP!, a local Business Network International (BNI) chapter.

She has been a nurse supervisor, nurse counselor at IC, an elementary school teacher, Financial Advisor, and now is an Innkeeper. She and her husband, Frank Musgrave, own The Edge of Thyme B&B in Candor, NY. In 2010, they were awarded 3 awards: the Best rural B&B for 2010 and Best Afternoon Tea 2010 both by the LanierBB.com travel guide, and Eva Mae was awarded Tioga County's best chef.

Eva Mae uses her abilities to give disadvantaged children a better chance at a good life. She has taught children to read, and given many adults hope for their children's futures. She finds time in her busy schedule to take some children of a neighbor to Rochester for regular orthodontia work that no local doctor was able to tackle. She and her husband hire high school girls to work for them in their B&B, teaching them skills they will need in life. They encourage these girls to go on to college, and require them to find their own replacements, which empowers them with responsibility to others. One of the girls became the Tioga Dairy Princess and went on to college, 2 things she might never have been able to do with out Eva Mae's encouragement and help.

This year, when her neighbor's home burned to the ground, she started working to help them get into another home. What I have written above is only the tip of the iceberg of her influence in the lives of the people around her and in her communities. Of all of the terrific women I know, Eva Mae Musgrave is someone we all need to know!

Eva Mae Musgrave is a quiet champion of those who are under-served and disadvantaged. She has a heart for children in need and their families and quietly, yet effectively, advocates for them. Eva Mae is so quiet about her good deeds that it is hard to find out exactly what she had done and is doing for her community!

She and her husband, Frank, hire local high school girls as staff at the Edge of Thyme B & B; in addition to much-appreciated income, the students also receive a thorough grounding in best inn-keeping and business practices, as well as life skills. The students are encouraged to aim high in deciding about their own future careers, to excel scholastically, and to continue their educations beyond high school. In addition, they are charged with finding their own replacements for their positions at the B & B when they graduate; empowering them with a responsibility, and inherent trust, that few, if any,  business owners extend to their employees. She has taken several local children to Rochester on a regular and long-term basis to receive expensive orthodontic work that was not locally available, staving off future irreparable structural problems for these young people.

Eva Mae is also well aware that first physical impressions go a long way to ensuring that a young person gets their foot in the door of opportunity in the business world. Eva Mae has voluntarily and successfully taught children who were having difficulty reading, thus opening up new worlds for them. With her quiet service and dedication, she has given local parents assistance and encouragement and -- the most priceless gift of all  the knowledge that their children's futures have a higher chance of being successful.

Although she is passionate about helping children succeed, her good works are not centered solely on the younger generation. Recently, when a neighbor's home was destroyed by fire, she set to work immediately to help them get set up in another home. Eva Mae seems to intuitively know when someone could use a helping hand, and quietly and privately responds. I hope others will come forward and fill in the gaps in this nomination, as her deeds certainly exceed the ones noted on this form.

Bio:

In 1619AD Annaniah Gifford was given 113 of New Jersey by the King of England - an
excellent way to get rid of a Quaker. He settled in Shrewsbury N.J. He became the initial
map creator of New Jersey. Later another grandfather became the first governor ofN.J.
Lewis Morris (1738). In 1911 Eva Mae's own grandfather, Charles Gifford was on the
way to be sworn in as governor when he died on the train of pneumonia. His wife, Eva
Mae Reynolds Gifford was left to raise eleven children. She had been trained by Dr.
Higgins to Doctor the people of Allenwood, NJ which she did to support her family.

In 1608 AD William Thomas arrived from Wales to Plymouth, MA and settled the town
of Brownville, Maine. He farmed the land as did his successors. The University of Maine
was created and my grandfather, Frank Albert Thomas and his brothers and sisters
attended and graduated from that institution. Grandfather Thomas was a chemical and a
civil engineer. His wife, Ida Sawyer Thomas was an operatic singer. He built bridges all
over the U.S. He worked for the TV A in Tennessee. Charles D. Thomas, his brother was
the chief engineer of the Lincoln Tunnel in NY.

Why does this all matter? It gives a basis for character and expectation for the next
generations.

Eva Mae Gifford Musgrave was born in Point Pleasant, NJ. Her parents were Archie
Higgins Gifford and Medora Adelma Thomas Gifford. She grew up at the New Jersey
shore, schooled at Manasquan High School concentrating in the classics.

1957 Graduated from Manasquan High School.

1960 Graduated from Jersey City Medical Center with a nursing degree.
1960 Married Frank Webster Musgrave PHD.

1960 - 1968 Supervised the pediatric dept and the emergency room of Point Pleasant
Hospital.

1962 Son - Scott Kenneth Musgrave was born
1963 Daughter - Marcia Carol Musgrave was born

1968 Moved to Ithaca, NY Frank took a position as a Professor of Economics.
1968 -1970 Taught Kindergarten and First grade.

1970 - 1975 Nurse Counselor at Ithaca College.

1976 Graduated from Ithaca College, summa cum laude, with a major in History and
minors in religion, art history and business. Spent one year in IC's London Center.
1976 -1993 Financial Advisor with Lutheran Brotherhood and Massachusetts Mutual.
1984 Moved to Candor, NY

1984 - present, Innkeeper - Co-owner of The Edge Of Thyme A Bed and Breakfast Inn,
