Dawne Peacock has been a leader at BJM for 9 years and never stops pursuing full access and opportunities for children and families. She works closely with staff and adults in the lives of the children to assure that whatever it takes to provide and educate happens with strong and meaningful impact. She gives her time and actions endlessly. She has served on leadership teams like PTA and Site council, leads the basketball programs, initiates fundraising, acts on behalf of the BJM extended day program and reaches out to community partners to assure that the children have learning opportunities inside and outside of school.

She is wise, kind, humble and always seeks solutions for some of the toughest situations. Her invisible work for families makes positive impacts on their lives and ability to parent and care for their children in ways that may not otherwise happen (employment, transportation, clothes, food, education, etc.). I highly recommend her for this recognition.

Bio:

I was born in Antigua in the Caribbean. I came to the U.S. with my mother and brother at the age of 12. When I arrived in the U.S., I lived in the Bronx then later moved to Queens. I received my B.A. in Sociology from Queens College, City University of New York. While at Queens College, I met and married my soul mate of 16 years, my husband Seth Peacock. We are the proud parents of three children, two daughters ages 13 and 16 and a 11 year old son. The children are currently spread out at all levels of school Elementary, Middle and High school.

I first came to Ithaca after my husband and I graduated from Queens College. We moved to Ithaca so Seth could attend Cornell Law School. Altogether we have lived in Ithaca for over ten years. I love living in Ithaca because it’s a great place to raise a family and has great sense of community. I have always tried to be engaged with my community by being involved in my children’s lives and activities. This has afforded me many opportunities to contribute to the lives and experiences of other children in my community. My main focus has been volunteering as a BJM parent to support the needs of all of the students. I have served as PTA Vice President and President, Basketball Program Coordinator for the past eight years and a board member of BJM’s Academic Plus Extended Day Program. These experiences have prepared me to take on greater challenges and this Spring I will begin serving as a member on the board of Loaves and Fishes. I am currently employed at Cornell Law School as the Assistant Director for the Clarke Center for International and Comparative legal Studies.
