Name: Sara Pines |
| I would like to nominate Sara for her tenacity and endless drive to make sure she goes to bed at night knowing that she did her best to ensure that the less previlaged then herself had a healthy meal, just as she did. For twenty two years Sara never stopped working on behalf of the poor and the hungry. Tirelessly she collected fresh food from local supermarkets and Cornell's dining halls, and together with her troops of volunteers, delivered the food to soup kitchen across Tompkins County. Sara's personal generosity didn't stop here. Few years ago she joined Dining For Women, Ithaca's chapter of a national organization, and continued to contribute monthly large sums of money to poor and deprived women in developing countries. Recently Sara returned from a trip to Ethiopia, and while there, she delivered suitcases of medical supplies and money to the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa. Sara is a short women who towers above many of us. "you've got to have something to eat and a little of love in your life, before you can hold still for any damn body's sermon on how to behave" Billie Holiday (1915-59) Nominated by Miriam Bisk Bio: I am a citizen of the world and an aspirant of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. As one of the founders of Ecovillage, I am also active as an environmentalist with a passion to preserve, organize and plan for the next seven generations. I founded and directed Friendship Donations Network since 1988 in response to waste of nutritious day-old and surplus food outlets - 100 billion pounds per year! In contrast, I saw hunger and food insecurity all around me! I attended Brooklyn College with a B.A.; Hunter School of Social Work, MSW; Cornell University, Ph. D. I travel annually to another country every year, sometimes to tour it, sometimes to volunteer. |
